１５日、パキスタンのペシャワル（Peshawar）で、有力宗教政党JUI（Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam）の最高幹部の１人で６９歳のMaulana Hassan Jan氏が暗殺された。犯人はまだ捕まらず。
翌日、ペシャワルのスタジアムで葬儀が行われ、警察発表でおよそ５万人（つまり、おそらくはもっと人数が多そうだ）が参列した。参加者の中にはムシャラフ大統領やアメリカへの怒りを叫ぶ者もいた（注：暗殺の背後にムシャラフ大統領がいるのではないかと疑っている者がいることを示唆しているのだろう）。
Maulana Hassan Jan氏は元下院議員で地元の宗教系大学の校長をしていた。オマル師の友人と言われ、２００１年９月１１日の後は、米軍のアフガニスタン侵攻を避けるため、ビン・ラディンを追放するようにオマル師説得に向かったパキスタン人宗教学者グループの一員だった。

Maulana Hassan Jan was shot dead on Saturday evening by a group which opened fire on a car taking him to evening prayers in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province.
Thousands of people poured into the stadium in Peshawar to attend the funeral prayers for Jan, 69, a senior leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam - a religious party which controls the province's government.
